Industry Professionals Reassure Public with Plumbing Specific COVID-19 Awareness Course

7 April 2020

As the COVID-19 pandemic strengthens its hold, Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland (MPAQ) has developed an awareness program specifically targeted at the plumbing industry.

Currently available for MPAQ members only, the knowledge gained in the COVID-19 Awareness online course will help plumbers to undertake their roles and duties in respect of government restrictions and regulations and place a greater emphasis on the safety requirements for the business, their staff and their customers.

MPAQ would like to call on government leaders and health professionals to acknowledge that licensed plumbing and drainage contractors provide an essential service in the fight against COVID-19, and as such, it is vital that professions in this industry are equipped with the most relevant and up to date information.

MPAQ President, Kent Vickers, said “Licensed plumbers, drainers and gasfitters provide an essential service that some people take for granted.”

“Plumbers protect the health and safety of the community, providing clean drinking water, the removal of sewage and other wastewater, and without them we would always live with the risk of widespread water-borne diseases.”

Prior to modern drainage, diseases like cholera and typhoid were far more common. Adequate sanitary systems and clean reliable water helped to all but eradiate these pandemics of the past.

“Plumbers are licensed and trained professionals, and Queensland would have a permanent and potentially catastrophic public health problem without them,” Mr Vickers said.

“Due to the current situation, the health and safety of the industry and their customers are our primary concern.”

“With the current emphasis on enhanced personal hygiene we believe this awareness program is another tool in the plumbers tool belt”.

The COVID-19 Awareness course provides a guide for participants, from the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) to sanitation of the work site. It also includes printable resources so that customers are informed prior to the tradespersons visiting site.

All plumbers who complete the course will be issued with a certificate of completion and a logo that they will be able to use promote their COVID-19 awareness training to consumers.

More information about this online course can be found at www.mpaq.com.au.
