Peak Industry Body Promotes Licensed Plumbers to Celebrate World Plumbing Day

World Plumbing Day is celebrated internationally on 11 March every year and is an opportunity to recognise the important work that plumbers do to maintain and improve the health and safety of communities all over the world.

Today, to celebrate World Plumbing Day, Master Plumbers' Association of Queensland (MPAQ) is launching a new consumer campaign to promote the importance of using a licensed plumber and asking the public to consider what life would be like without plumbers.

Legally, plumbing, drainage, gas fitting, hydraulic services design, and fire protection must be performed by a licensed contractor. Generally, building work over the value of $3,300 must be carried out by a Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) licensed contractor; however, the plumbing and gas trades services must be performed by licensed persons, regardless of the value of the work.

Through video and social media campaigns, MPAQ hopes to educate the community about the value of using a licensed plumber, particularly from a health and safety perspective, and how keeping your home and family safe should be at the forefront when considering DIY plumbing work in your home.

MPAQ Executive Director, Penny Cornah, said, “it is important that consumers are aware that by using an unlicensed plumber they may be putting their home and family at risk as they may not comply with important regulations.”

With the recent reports coming out of South Australia of the potentially deadly bacteria, legionella, reportedly found lurking in the bathrooms of 75% of Adelaide homes, there is no better time for the public to understand how important using licensed contractors to install and maintain their water services is.

“The easiest way to ensure your plumbing work is completed safely and complies with the industry standard is to find a licensed plumber using the Find a Master Plumber database,” said Mrs Cornah.

Find a Master Plumber is a database made up of a list of MPAQ members who can perform licensed plumbing work, which can be filtered by location and speciality.

More about World Plumbing Day

The day aims to spread awareness of the importance of plumbing and plumbers in protecting public health and improving amenity, as well as celebrating all the important work plumbers have done to improve the world.

According to the World Plumbing Council:

  • Over 1 billion people gained access to piped water supplies between 2000 and 2015.
  • The global population of people who used safely managed sanitation services increased from 28% in 2000 to 39% in 2015.
  • Between 2000 and 2015 the number of people defecating in the open declined from 1,229 million to 892 million, an average of 22 million people per year.
  • A 4-minute shower can now use as little as 24 litres of water.

On Friday 15 March, over 300 people will celebrate World Plumbing Day in Brisbane at the Industry’s biggest Breakfast and Expo hosted by MPAQ.

“This is an important opportunity for the whole community to appreciate the hard work performed by members of our industry,” said Mrs Cornah.

“Queensland plumbers are experts in their field, who deliver the highest standards in health and safety throughout the world.”
